Induction Ring

A close-up of the ring being illuminated because of a phone’s NFC reader.

What Is It?

The LED “jewel” on the ring can light up without a battery. If brought close to an NFC reader or wireless charging pad, it will start blinking!

The Crafts Side

The ring itself is made out of magnet wire held together by a spare twist tie. I liked that it was reminiscent of a toroidal inductor.

The Technology Side

Electromagnetic induction is almost like magic. If current goes through a wire, a magnetic field is created around a wire. This also works in reverse: a mangetic field around a wire will cause (or “induce”) a current in that wire. Putting these two behaviors together allows power to be transmitted between two wires that aren’t touching using magnetic fields.
